Lumberjacks beaten by Gogebic in UP tourney
ESCANABA–The Alpena Community College men’s basketball team fell just shy of victory on Saturday, losing to Gogebic Community College 58-55 on the second day of the Quality Inn & Suites Tournament in Escanaba.
Michael Stuart paced the Lumberjacks (1-7) with 13 points and Oliver Rice added 12. Jameson Pierrelus had 11 rebounds and Demarcion Chilton had nine.
“Both teams were even on every statistic except they shot 10 more free throws than us. It’s frustrating because we couldn’t get a call all tournament,” Alpena coach Mark Jacobs said. “We know we can play with anyone, now we need to learn how to take the next step and win some games.”
On Friday, Alpena lost to Bay College 71-61.
Pierrelus led ACC with 25 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks and Stuart added 11 points. Tristan Smith added nine points and Jacobs said he played one of his best games of the year.
“We played well, we just gave up little lapses during the game and we gave up a few easy buckets,” Jacobs said. “We couldn’t catch a break.”
The ACC women’s team lost to Gogebic 108-65 on Saturday.
Alexis Smith led the Lumberjacks (0-7) with 17 points, Sam Szymanski added 15 points and seven rebounds, Jasmyn Schultz had 10 points and 10 rebounds and Morgan Allen had 14 points.
“The girls played good and kept playing against a good team and never gave up,” ACC coach Bobby Allen said. “Hopefully we can build on this going forward into the new year.”
Both ACC teams will play at St. Clair on Thursday. The women’s team will play at 5:30 p.m. and the men’s team will play at 7:30 p.m.
