Hillman scores early, often in win over Eagles

FAIRVIEW–The Hillman boys basketball team used a dominant first quarter to route Fairview on Friday.

The Tigers (9-0, 6-0 North Star League) jumped out to a 22-0 lead after one period and never looked back on their way to a 61-34 win.

“We got off to a really nice, impressive start tonight,” Hillman coach Eric Muszynski said. “We did a great job of forcing turnovers and getting out on the break. We had 18 steals, and our backcourt had 13 of them. We played really good defense on their best offensive players and we just had fun tonight. All 12 guys got in the game so that’s always a good thing.”

Andrew Funk led the Tigers with 17 points and five steals. Jared Juergens had 13 points and Brandon Banks added 11.

Jay Cleeves led Fairview with 10 points.

Hillman returns to action when it hosts Hale on Tuesday.

The Thunderbolts (7-3) jumped out to a early lead that helped propel them to the victory.

Drew Heff led Mio in scoring with 22 points and Brendan DeFlorio chipped in with 13.

Pellston 75,

Onaway 73

ONAWAY–The Onaway boys basketball team lost another heartbreaker on Friday, falling to Pellston 75-73 at home.

Onaway trailed by 15 at one point during the second half, but the Cardinals fought back to take a tentative one-point lead late in the contest.

Ultimately the Cardinals (3-7) were undone by poor free throw shooting and some costly turnovers. Onaway was just 4-of-15 from the line over the final eight minutes.

“Turnovers killed us,” Onaway coach Eddy Szymoniak said. “It came down to the third quarter. We got behind by 15, had some turnovers and couldn’t hit some shots.”

Onaway led 15-13 after one quarter and 38-29 at halftime. Pellston overtook the Cardinals 58-51 after three quarters.

Trevor Wregglesworth led Onaway with 26 points and Lucas Tollini added 18. Keli Russell chipped in with 13 and Kevin Pearson had 10.

“Lucas Tollini was an absolute beast all over the court and Nick Byrne did a nice job on the boards for us tonight,” Szymoniak said. “I thought we played great. In the second quarter, I thought we played phenomenal.”

Onaway plays at Inland Lakes on Wednesday.
