Alcona boys edged by Falcons

WEST BRANCH–The Alcona boys basketball team came up just shy of victory again.

Aaron Zettel’s late drive and score proved enough to send Ogemaw Heights past the Tigers 50-48 on Saturday.

Alcona trailed by seven with 2:30 left and rallied to take the lead with 20 seconds to go before Zettel’s basket.

Alcona turned the ball over, but still had a chance after an Ogemaw timeout. Alcona fouled on the inbounds pass and though the Falcons missed both free throws, Alcona didn’t have any timeouts left to set up a play with just two seconds left.

Antavius Mikazes led Alcona with 16 points and Jordan Steiner added 11.

Alcona led 15-8 after one quarter and both teams were tied 22-22 at halftime. Ogemaw pulled ahead 38-33 after three quarters and held off the Tigers in the last eight minutes.

Alcona plays at Fairview on Jan. 23.
