Wildcats beat Sault to get back above .500

SAULT STE. MARIE–Chris DeRocher scored 30 points, Bruz Copping added 20 and the Alpena High boys basketball team got back above the .500 mark with an 81-52 win over Sault Ste. Marie on Friday.

Alpena (3-2) led 40-24 at halftime and 67-37 after three quarters.

“Overall we played really well. We played well defensively and forced a lot of turnovers,” Alpena coach John Pintar said.

Aidan Goike added eight assists for the Wildcats.

Alpena plays Friday at Ogemaw Heights.

Alpena’s JV team won 60-39. Tyler Dickinson led Alpena with 22 points and Riley Arlt had 11.

Alpena’s freshman team was also victorious, beating the Blue Devils 59-31. Ryan Lee paced Alpena with 20 points, Chris Dault added 12 points and Luke Tucker and Remus Rushton each added eight.

ESCANABA–The Alpena Community College women’s basketball team lost to Bay Community College 69-37 on Friday.

Alexis Smith led Alpena with 14 points and Kaalin Crawford added seven.

“We started off slow. We just need more confidence in what we’re doing, but we’re coming along,” Alpena coach Bobby Allen said.

Alpena is 0-6 and plays at 10 a.m. today against Gogebic Community College on the second day of the Quality Inn & Suites Tournament in Escanaba.
