Warriors open BOTB tourney with a victory
The Alpena Warriors girls hockey team opened its Battle on the Bay Tournament with a hard fought 3-1 win over Copper Country of Houghton. Led by player of the game Taylor Tolsdorf’s two goals, the Warriors overcame a sluggish first two periods before putting the game away in the third.
Alpena goalie Emma Fraser played solid in net, turning away multiple scoring chances through out the game. Emily Vivian tallied the third goal on an assist by Lizzy Kendziorski. Erin Bailey chipped in with assists on both of Tolsdorf’s goals.
“We came out flat and played our three worst periods of the year,” Coach Mike Nunneley said. “Copper Country came to play and they took it to us for two periods.”
After going down one goal 10 minutes into the first period, Alpena looked like it tied the score on Tatum Moran’s shot, only to have it waived off.
“When they waived off Tatum’s goal it was like the hockey gods weren’t on our side, we had multiple shots on their net and their players and their goalie kept blocking and saving them. Good teams have to win when they’re not playing well. We dodged a bullet today,” Nunneley said.
Alpena returns to the ice today against Grand Rapids. The Griffins tied Bad Axe 5-5 in their Friday game.
“We have to get back to how we play hockey tomorrow. We’ll make some adjustments for Saturday,” Nunneley said.
Kensington topped Traverse City 12-2 and Marquette shut out Midland 2-0 in the other contests at Northern Lights Arena.
Alpena’s game is at 1 p.m against the Griffins and it face Bad Axe in the evening contest at 6:30 p.m.
