Oscoda, Mio boys earn league hoops wins

HALE–Grant Huebel scored 27 points and the Oscoda boys basketball team improved to 2-0 on the year with a 62-46 win over Hale on Thursday.

Owen Franklin added 21 points for the Owls and Brayden Mallak chipped in with 8.

The Owls will host Rogers City on Monday.

Mio 63, Fairview 43

MIO–Brendan DeFlorio scored 17 points and the Mio boys basketball team defeated Fairview 63-43 on Thursday.

Mio led 13-7 after one quarter, 29-24 at halftime and 43-30 after three quarters.

Tylor Ross paced Fairview with 25 points.

Mio will play at Alcona on Monday.

JV HOCKEY

Alpena opens with win, tie on the road

The Alpena Boosters JV hockey team opened up its season in Muskegon and Grand Rapids last weekend, coming away with a win and a tie.

On Saturday, Alpena played Muskegon Mona Shores and won 4-1. Brett Nelson scored at 10:06 in the first period with assists from Hunter Canute and Nick Scultz. Mona shores tied it at 8:07 in the second period.

Ian Shriner scored with 43 seconds left in the second period unassisted. Shriner scored again at 12:17 in the third period with an assist from Braeden Schultz. Logan O’Donnell scored an empty net goal with 19 seconds remaining in game. Ethan Fitzpatrick was in goal for Alpena.

On Sunday, Alpena played GRAHA Griffins and tied 3-3. The Griffins opened the scoring at 9:11 in the first period. Alpena tied it at 4:09 of the first with a goal from Brett Nelson and an assist from Canute.

Brett Nelson scored again early in the third period, assisted by Nick Schultz. The Griffins scored at 13:40 in the third period.

With four minutes left in the third period, Tanner Orban scored, assisted by Ian Shriner. The Griffins pulled their goalie and tied it up with 25 seconds left in the third. Jarret Paul was in goal.

Alpena plays again this weekend in a home tournament at Northern Lights Arena. Alpena will open tournament play at 4 p.m. On Friday against Tawas.
