Hurons defeated by Hale in season opener
HALE –The Rogers City boys basketball team opened the season with a 57-39 loss to Hale on Monday.
The Hurons battled in what was a close game throughout the first half as Hale led 16-15 after one quarter and extended the lead to four at the break, but the second half belonged to the Eagles as they took a 43-37 lead into the fourth quarter and held Rogers City to just two points in the final quarter of play.
“We had a lot of turnovers, but played very hard. Our shots weren’t falling, but I was happy that we played hard until the end,” Rogers City coach Matt Ponik said.
The Hurons were led by Ethan Hincka who scored 13 points and Phil Grambau ended the night with 11.
Alcona 55, Atlanta 36
ATLANTA–It was a tale of two halves on opening night for the Atlanta and Alcona boys basketball teams. The second half belonged to the Tigers and so did the game. Alcona used a big fourth quarter to defeat Atlanta on Monday by a score of 55-36.
The scored was tied at 11 after one quarter and Atlanta held a one point lead at the half.
Alcona caught fire in the third quarter scoring 19 points and holding the Huskies to just six. The Tigers were just as dominant in the fourth as they closed out the game.
“At one point we had a nine point lead in the first half, but we came out flat in the second half and Alcona took advantage of that,” Atlanta coach Kevin Haren said. “I did see some positives tonight, we just have to protect a lead a little better and play a full four quarters.”
The Huskies were led by Austin Corbin who scored 19 points and Reece Wood added 12 points.
Atlanta will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to Boyne Falls.
FAIRVIEW–The Fairview boys basketball team opened the season with a tough loss, falling to Oscoda at home by a final score of 70-20.
Tyler Ross led the Eagles with 11 points and Grant Litzke chipped in with five points.
