Taylor Fleming did a little bit of everything on Friday.

The Rogers City junior recorded 23 points, grabbed six rebounds and had nine steals as the Rogers City girls basketball team defeated Posen 63-41 at Posen High School.

Using its deep bench and playing fast on both ends of the floor, Rogers City (2-0) shook off an early challenge from Posen and overwhelmed the Vikings as the game went on.

“This is a good victory. We were able to rotate a lot of bodies and keep people fresh. I think that’s going to be a big key for us as the season goes along,” Rogers City coach Duane Pitts said. “We didn’t miss a beat too much when we subbed in and some of these kids are getting better for the future and everything.”

With its own all-conference player on the bench, Posen (1-3) got a firsthand look at crucial a player of that caliber can be to a lineup. The Vikings played without first team all-conference forward Cami LaTulip, who was out with an illness.

Still the Vikings played with a spirited effort and held their own against a seasoned Rogers City squad.

“I was proud of our kids. Our team can’t afford to lose a first team all-conference player and make up for it in a big way,” Posen coach Karl Momrik said. “Fleming hurt us by beating us down the floor, but I think our girls did a great job in the halfcourt. Real pleased with the effort.”

Kayla Rabeau added 13 points for the Hurons and Hannah Fleming added nine. In all, nine different Hurons scored at least two points in the win.

Brooke Ciarkowski paced Posen with 15 points and Riley Krajniak added 10.

Rogers City led 31-20 at halftime and Fleming and Rabeau helped extend Rogers City’s lead in the third quarter as the Hurons forced turnovers for some easy layups.

Posen trailed by 12 with 4:46 left in the third quarter, but without consistent scoring, the Vikings couldn’t keep pace with the Hurons. Rogers City led 51-36 after three quarters and opened the fourth quarter on a 10-1 run to extend its lead to 61-37.

Rogers City opened the game on a 9-0 run, but Posen rallied back as Krajniak and Ciarkowski hit three pointers to make it 9-6 and Posen only trailed 111-8 before the Hurons ended the period by scoring the last seven points for an 18-8.

Posen got as close as 11 in the second quarter, but with Fleming scoring easily inside, the Vikings couldn’t draw any closer.

Posen’s JV team defeated Rogers City 40-18. Elizabeth Romel and Abi Schellie led Posen with 12 points each. Kyley LaFleche led Rogers City with eight points.
