Alpena, Alcona basketball teams end the year with victories
CADILLAC — The Alpena girls basketball team ended 2017 on a positive note.
The Wildcats traveled to Cadillac on Thursday for an important Big North Conference matchup and defeated the Vikings by a final score of 53-39.
Alpena got off to a hot start early and held a 21-7 lead after one quarter.
The Wildcats continued to build on its lead throughout the first half and they took a comfortable 30-13 advantage into the break.
Alpena kept up its solid play in the second half and was able to earn a huge conference victory and finish the year on a three game winning streak.
Emma Jore paced the Wildcats scoring 13 points on the night. Dakota Prevo added 12 points and both Jade Shultz and Kourtney Jones each ended the night with 10 points apiece as Alpena continued to display its offensive balance with four players scoring in double figures.
With the win, Alpena improves to 4-2 overall on the year and the Wildcats are 2-1 and in second place in the BNC behind Petoskey who their lone conference loss came from.
Alpena will be back in action after the team returns from the holiday break and will face another crucial BNC matchup when they travel to Traverse City Central to take on the Trojans on January 3.
Alcona 58, Fairview 16
ALCONA — The Alcona girls basketball team defeated Fairview 58-16 on Friday.
The Tigers were led by Megan Grove who scored 14 points. Taylor Livingston had 12 points, Hailee Gordy added eight points and Bri Fogle chipped in with seven points.
“We got off to a bit of a slow start, but then picked up the defensive intensity in the second quarter. It was a good win with balanced scoring,” Alcona head coach Mark Feldhiser said.
Alcona will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Little Caesars Arena in Detroit to play Oscoda.
The Alcona JV team was also victorious, defeating Fairview by a score of 57-17. Liz Henderson led the way with 16 points, Lilly Bilbey added 13 points and Anna Loyer chipped in with 10 points.
Alcona 44, Fairview 41
ALCONA — The Alcona boys basketball team edged Fairview on Friday night by a final score of 44-41.
Devon Mills paced the Tigers with a team high 12 points. Antavius Mikazes added nine points and Alex Stephenson chipped in with seven points.
” Fairview, as always played an excellent defensive game. They play tough every time we see them. We’ve been off for 11 days and it showed. We had lots of foul trouble early,” Alcona head coach Ryan Bilbey said. “Our guys toughed it out late and I’m happy with that. Sometimes you just have to grind out a win.”
