The Alpena Community College women’s basketball team was unable to keep pace with an athletic and lengthy Mid Michigan Community College team on Saturday as the Lumberjacks fell by a final score of 72-37 at Park Arena.

The Lakers wasted no time taking advantage of the shorthanded Lumberjacks who were much more undersized than their opponents. Mid Michigan opened the game going on a 12-2 run within the first four minutes of the game and forced Alpena head coach Bobby Allen to call a timeout and help his team regroup.

The timeout didn’t slow the Lakers down as they continued to find ways to score all game as they took a 10 point lead into the second quarter.

Mid Michigan seemingly had its way with the home team in nearly every quarter and got contributions from its entire roster an proved just how much depth they had as all but one Laker on the roster cracked the scoring column.

Mid Michigan held a 36-15 halftime lead and didn’t slow down the test of the way. The Lakers extended their lead to 58-23 after three quarters and were able to coast to a lopsided victory.

Despite the result, a bright spot for the Lumberjacks was the play of Alexis Smith who scored a game high 21 points. Jasmine Schultz added six points and both Kailey Hunt and Morgan Allen each had four points apiece.

The Lakers were paced by Breyton Meeks who scored 16 points. Clara Loukus added 13 points and Haley Cross chipped in with eight points.

Alpena falls to 0-5 on the season and will have some time off before they travel to Bay College in Escanaba on December 29, for the Quality Inn & Suites tournament.
