No shortage of points

Alcona lights up the scoreboard in senior night victory

LINCOLN — With a playoff spot already clinched, the Alcona football team entered Friday nights regular season finale against Mio with a chance to secure a home playoff game with a win on senior night.

Senior night and a chance to host a playoff game next week, it was more than enough motivation for a Tigers team that was coming off of a loss a week ago and the Tigers left absolutely no doubt as they scored early and often to eventually come away with a lopsided 68-30 victory against the Thunderbolts.

Alcona received the opening kickoff and put points on the board less than two minutes into the contest when Jack Hutchinson rumbled in from 10 yards out to give the Tigers the early advantage and it was only the beginning of a first quarter that was dominated by the home team.

Exactly 11 seconds later on the ensuing kickoff, Alex Stephenson picked up a fumble and ran it back for a touchdown.

Things didn’t get much better for the Thunderbolts as they turned the ball over on their next play from scrimmage when Cody Schram dove and intercepted a pass from Mio quarterback Brendan DeFlorio.

The Tigers marched down the field again and this time it was Kyle Haeger finding pay dirt from a yard out to put Alcona ahead 24-0 less than five minutes into the game.

With 2:28 left in the quarter it was number 32 Ethan Long putting the Tigers up by 32 after he powered his way up the middle for a one yard score.

Alcona was able to find the end zone one final time before the quarter ended as Tim Hutchinson raced in from 59 yards out to score a touchdown with 11 seconds left in the opening quarter as five different Tigers scored five total touchdowns in a dominant first quarter.

DeFlorio was picked off one again on the final play of the quarter as Mason Clark came away up with an interception as the Tigers held a 40-0 lead after one quarter.

Alcona struck again eight seconds into the second quarter as Long ran a 21 yard touchdown on the first play of the quarter.

Another Tiger got into the end zone with 5:50 left in the quarter as Matthew Krisan raced up the middle for a 12 yard touchdown to give Alcona a 54-0 lead with nearly six minutes left in the half.

After a nice kickoff return, Mio finally got on the board when they hit a big play as DeFlorio connected with Haden Moor for a 42 yard touchdown.

Just over two minutes later, the seventh Tiger of the night reached the end zone as Jacob Sytek ran in from a yard out for a touchdown, giving Alcona 62 first half points.

Mio was able to score one more time before the half ended and the Tigers went into the break up by a score of 62-16 and were able to coast to a big victory on senior night.

Alcona finishes the year with an overall record of 7-2 and 5-1 in North Star League play with their lone loss coming in a close game against Au Gres who was undefeated heading into the final week of the season.

The win also gives Alcona an opportunity to possibly host a first round playoff game, but the Tigers will have to wait until tomorrow’s selection Sunday to see who and where they will be playing.
