Alpena tennis team hands out end of the year awards

The Alpena tennis team held its annual awards banquet on Tuesday at Alpena High School. Ashwin Chhapamohan earned the coaches award. Josh Pokorzynski earned Most Improved Singles Player. Hunter O’Neil and Dean Kowalewsky were awarded Most Improved Doubles Team.

Oscoda 0

ROGERS CITY — The Rogers City volleyball team made quick work of Oscoda on Tuesday, sweeping the Owls by scores of 25-7, 25-14 and 25-16.

The Hurons were led by Kayla Rabeau who had seven digs, six kills and five aces. Taylor Fleming added nine kills, six aces and five digs. Jayna Hance chipped in with 10 digs. Kristin Brege dished out 16 assists and Kyrsten Altman ended the night with four kills.

Rogers City will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Alcona for a North Star League matchup against the Tigers.

Hillman 3,

Alcona 1

HILLMAN — The Hillman volleyball team continued on its winning ways, defeating Alcona in four sets by scores of 25-22, 25-11, 19-25 and 25-17.

Hillman was led by Kristen Kenyon who had 21 kills and five aces. Brooke Jones also added 28 digs and eight kills.

Hillman improves to 19-3-3 on the year and will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Posen for another North Star League matchup.

Onaway 3,

Macelona 0

MANCELONA — The Onaway volleyball team earned a sweep over Mancelona on Tuesday, winning by scores of 25-20, 25-15 and 25-8.

The Cardinals were led by Maddie McLean who had 13 kills, four aces and four digs. Jacquelyn Nash dished out 22 assists, added four digs, four kills and three aces. Kennedy Crawford chipped in with four digs, three aces and two kills. Calley Selke ended the night with five kills and three digs and Sunny Flory added three aces.

“It was a pretty good night for us. We made a few mistakes early in the first set, but we ended the night really strong,” Onaway coach Steve Watson said. “We hit the ball really well tonight and attacked well and we were very mistake free in that area which was good to see.”

The Cardinals improve to an impressive 39-4 overall on the season.

Onaway will be back in action on Monday when they travel to Sault Ste. Marie for a quad against the Blue Devils and Cheboygan.
