Alpena 12U team suffers winless regional weekend

The Alpena 12U team traveled to Kentucky for the regional tournament and suffered three losses in three games.

In game one, Elizabethtown, Kentucky jumped to an early lead and Alpena was unable to recover. Nerves, temperature and errors contributed to the game one loss. Reed Seabase and Marc Kirschner had the only two hits of the day. Player of the game was Marc Kirschner.

The highlight of Alpena’s tournament trail was during game two against North Harrison, Indiana. In an extra inning affair that had multiple lead changes, Alpena ultimately fell on a walk off homerun to end the game 10-8. Alpena was led by Seabase who earned player of the game honors as he went 3-for-4 including a double and a home run. Kirschner also had a home run in the fifth inning to give Alpena the lead 8-7. Logan Momrik pitched five innings in relief in one of his best outings of the year.

In Alpena’s final game, Trevor Miller came on in relief during the first inning which prevented Warren, Ohio scoring any more runs until the fifth inning. This game was also a rematch of a pool game from the 2016 Regionals. Alpena was unable to convert with bases loaded in both the second and third innings. After several 10 minute water breaks every 30 minutes during the first through third innings due to a heat index of over 100 degrees the game was finally delayed for four hours with the heat index reaching over 104 degrees. Making it back to the fields later that day, the teams headed right into the fourth inning. A home run by Miller in the fifth inning rounded off the scoring for Alpena as they fell by a score of 8-2 and Alpena was then eliminated from the tournament. Miller received play of the game honors.

Elizabethtown and North Harrison both advanced out Alpena’s bracket with North Harrison advancing to the finals on Sunday.
