Active community members and longtime Aliferis Race participants Ken Dully and Marie Gilmet-Dully have been named the honorary race chairs for the 16th Annual Aliferis Memorial Race sponsored by MidMichigan Medical Center – Alpena’s Development Council.

“We were a little surprised when Ann Diamond reached out to us. It’s a great honor to be asked,” Marie said. “We have long supported the Medical Center and Cancer Center and look forward to our role in this year’s race.”

Ken has previously participated in the 5K run but more recently the two have teamed up to take part in the bike race.

“We’ve enjoyed participating in the race each year and have encouraged friends and family to join us,” Ken said. “It’s a fun family event that kick starts the holiday weekend. It’s just a few hours in the morning and a great time to get together with community members to support the Medical Center.”

The Dullys are active volunteers for the Medical Center. Ken volunteers in the Cancer Center and Marie volunteers in the Surgical Lounge and as a member of the Medical Center’s Patient Experience Team and Ethics Committee.

In addition to volunteering together, the pair has also been through cancer diagnoses and treatment. Ken is a six-year bladder cancer survivor while Marie is a five year breast cancer survivor.

“We had wonderful support during our cancer treatments, and the cancer center staff is first class,” Marie said.

The Dullys currently volunteer with Friends Together, Relay for Life, the Lion’s Club and the Alpena Garden Club with past involvement with the League of Women Voters, The Alpena Concert Association, Friends of the Library, the George N. Fletcher Library Board and the Read Program.

“The Aliferis Race is great because there is an event for every fitness level whether you walk, run or want to bike,” Marie said. “We encourage friends and families to start preparing for this year’s race over the summer.”

The 16th Annual Aliferis Race, hosted by the Development Council’s Business Relations Committee at MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena, takes place on Sept. 2.

The Aliferis Memorial Race was named in memory of longtime Alpena General Hospital Pathologist Peter Aliferis, M.D., in appreciation of his many contributions made during his 37 years at the Medical Center and his dedication to the community. Dr. Aliferis retired in July 2000 and passed away from cancer March 13, 2002.

Race events include a duathlon (5K and 18.5 mile bike race), 5K run, 1-mile family run/walk, and 6-mile bike tour. Registration fees are $25 for the duathlon ($30 after Aug. 15, $35 race day), $20 for the 5K run, bike race, and 1-mile run/walk ($25 after Aug. 16, $30 on race day). A Family rate of $70 ($75 after Aug. 16, $80 on race day) for immediate family members only.

Those interested in participating may register online at www.midmichigan.org/race. Race forms are also available in the Development Department at the Medical Center in Alpena. All registrants receive a t-shirt and a chance to win University of Michigan prizes (must be present to win).

The race benefits the Peter Aliferis Scholarship Fund, the Alpena Cancer Center, patient enhancement projects and new technology for MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena.
