Wildcats win five titles at BNC Championships

GAYLORD–For the second straight year, Mitchell Day and Alec LeTourneau are conference champions.

The pair was part of a group of Wildcats who combined for five wins on Wednesday at the Big North Conference Championships in Gaylord.

Alpena boys team finished third with 114 1/2 points, the girls team finished fifth with 93 points and Alpena won titles in four different events.

LeTourneau won the pole vault (13-10) for the second straight year and Day won the 1,600 (4:25.89) and 3,200 runs (9:49.62). Day won the 3,200 for the second straight season after becoming the first Alpena male to win a conference crown in the event last year.

Day was also part of the winning 3,200 relay team along with Aidan Day, Josh Smith and Aden Smith and the quartet finished in 8:14.16.

Josh Smith had a runner-up finish for the Wildcats in the 800 run (2:02.92)

Karli Myers won the pole vault for Alpena’s girls team, finishing with a height of 8 feet, 10 inches to become Alpena’s first female pole vault champion since 2006.

Maddy Boyd had a pair of runner-up finishes for Alpena, finishing second in the 1,600 run (5:24.62) and 3,200 run (11:59.21). Dakota Prevo also had a runner-up finish in the discus (109-1).

W-P boys, Fairview girls win NSL titles

WHITTEMORE–The Whittemore-Prescott boys and Fairview girls track teams took top honors at the North Star League Championships on Tuesday at Whittemore-Prescott.

Whittemore’s boys team finished with 125 points, followed by Oscoda (51), Fairview (44.33), Hale (43.33), Au Gres (34), Hillman (28.33), Alcona (14), Rogers City (8), Posen (3) and Mio (2).

Fairview’s girls team finished with 103 points, followed by Alcona (64), Rogers City (62), Au Gres (36), Posen (26), Hillman (19), Hale (14), Oscoda (14), Whittemore (12) and Mio (3).

BASEBALL

Onaway splits with Kalkaska

KALKASKA–The Onaway baseball team split a pair of games with Kalkaska on Wednesday, winning the opener 12-7 and losing the nightcap 3-2.

Onaway (16-13-1) led 2-1 in the fourth inning of the nightcap before Kalkaska rallied for three runs to ultimately win the game.

Cody Neelis took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned), five hits and two walks in five innings.

Josiah Crawford was 1-for-2 with a run scored for Onaway and Lucas Tollini was 1-for-1 with a run scored and two stolen bases.

Gavin Fenstermaker was the winning pitcher in the opener, striking out four in 5 1/3 innings.

Nick Byrne was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, a double and an RBI; Fenstermaker was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored; Trevor Wregglesworth was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a double and two RBI and Crawford was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Onaway plays at Newberry on Tuesday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Wildcats unable to keep up with TC West

TRAVERSE CITY — For the second time this season, the Alpena soccer team was mercied by Big North Conference foe Traverse City West.

The Titans won by a score of 9-1 via mercy.

“It was the same old story. We were out athletisized and right now they just have better soccer players,” Alpena coach Tim Storch said.

The lone goal came off the foot of Molly Girard on an assist from Kourtney Jones. Girard now has 13 goals and seven assists on the year.

Alpena finishes the regular season with a 9-12-1 overall record and will be back in action on Tuesday when they open district play against the Titans.
