Alpena varsity, JV softball teams both victorious

MIDLAND–The Alpena softball team made quick work of Midland Dow on Friday, winning 14-0 and 19-0 in a doubleheader.

In the opener, Emma Fraser earned the win for Alpena (11-2) and the team had 13 hits including a three-run home run by Jade Schultz.

Schultz was the winning pitcher in the nightcap and Lizzy Heath also saw time on the mound. As a team, Alpena had 16 hits.

Alpena will compete in an eight-team tournament on Saturday in Midland.

JV SOFTBALL

Alpena sweeps Lake Orion

LAKE ORION — The Alpena JV softball team has been traveling to take on a strong Lake Orion program for the past several years and this year the Wildcats were able to come away victorious, sweeping Lake Orion by scores of 17-12 and 7-3.

“I am so proud of this team. We always come down here to play better competition and have never beat Lake Orion, but to finally beat them in the first game and take two is phenominal,” Alpena coach Amy Timm said. “I am super proud of these girls and the way the came together and played two great games today and accomplished something special.”

Lilly Lewis took the mound in game on and struck out three and walked two in picking up the win.

At the plate, several Wildcats carried a hot stick as Maddy Saddler went 4-for-5 with three doubles. Dayna LaBell, Kortney Dunn and Riley Alexander each had two doubles and Rachel McDonald added two singles.

In the nightcap, Kali Spomer got the win, striking out two and walking two.

Offensively, LaBell, Ursula Duncan and Megan Roznowski all singled and Saddler and Jaime Modrzynski each added a double apiece.

Alpena improves to 13-2 overall and will look to carry the momentum into an eight team tournament in Lake Orion Saturday. The Wildcats will play Clarkston in game one.

BASEBALL

Posen sweeps Hale

HALE — The Posen baseball team earned two victories on Thursday, sweeping a doubleheader against Hale, winning by scores of 4-2 and 9-7.

The Vikings got a strong performance on the mound in game one from Jared Sharpe who pitched four innings, allowing three hits, one walk and struck out 10 to pick up the win. Jared Kamyszek and George Kroll both came on in relief to finish the game off.

At the plate, Posen was led by Avery Werth who hit his first career home run as he belted a two-run shot over the fence that scored Dylan Schuch who reached on a bunt single to tie the game 2-2.

Sharpe and Levi Romel each had two hits and Darren Dubie had a double.

The Vikings came from behind to win the nightcap as they trailed 7-4 heading into the sixth inning, but scored five runs to come away victorious.

Werth picked up the win in relief, tossing 2 2/3 innings, allowing two hits, one run and struck out one. Kroll started the game, but was relieved after pitching the first 3 1/3 innings.

Offensively, Sharpe went a perfect 3-for-3. Werth and Mark Wisniewski both had two RBI apiece and Schuch, Dubie and Chase Schellie all collected an RBI in the win.

Posen improves to 8-4 overall on the year and is 2-2 in the North Star League.

The Vikings will be back in action Saturday when they compete in the Tulgestka Invite in Rogers City.

TRACK AND FIELD

Jr. Cats come up short

The Thunder Bay Junior High boys track team competed Thursday against Gaylord. The Blue Devils came out on top with a score of 93.5-41.5.

The Junior Cats did excel in several events throughout the competition. First place finishers were, Drew Seabase in the 1,600 run (5:25.4), Cooper Bright in the 200 dash (25.14), Charlie Williams in the high jump (4’11) and Jacob Kochanski in the 400 dash (67.4).

The 3,200 relay team of Eli Rondeau, Auston heath, Trevor Zolnierek and Seabase also finished first with a time of 11:16.

The 400 relay team of Bright, Williams, Patrick McCourt and Weston Domke also took first with a time of 53.3.

Second place points were earned by Ryan Voltz in 55 meter hurdles (10.2), Kochanski in the 1,600 run (5:27) and Domke in the high jump (4’8).

Other athletes scoring points were Rondeau in the 800 run, Williams in the 100 dash and Voltz in the pole vault.

Alpena will be back in action for their next meet on Thursday in Petoskey.
