DeRocher earns first team all-Big North honors

After a season in which he nearly averaged a double-double, Alpena High sophomore forward Chris DeRocher earned first team all-Big North Conference honors for the 2016-17 season.

The sophomore averaged 20.1 points and 9.3 rebounds in 21 games and regularly scored in double digits for the Wildcats, who finished 9-12.

DeRocher was one of two players two garner honors from the Big North. Senior Cam DeCaire earned an honorable mention after averaging 12.7 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.

Traverse City West’s Ryan Hayes was named the Player of the Year for the conference and Petoskey’s Seth Mann and Danny Kolp and Traverse City Central’s Tobin Schwanneke made up the rest of the first team.

Shelby Seaver was the only Alpena player to make one of the Big North’s girls teams, but the Wildcats got a slew of honorable mentions as Emma Jore, Jessica Marwede and Jasmyn Schultz all were honored in a reflection of Alpena’s balanced scoring.

Seaver averaged 10.1 points per game along with 8.4 rebounds. Marwede averaged 8.5 points and 5.2 rebounds, Jore averaged 8.1 points and 3.4 rebounds and Schultz averaged 7.2 points and six rebounds.

In the Ski Valley Conference, Onaway senior Keaton Brewer, who led the area with nearly 24 points per game earned first team all-conference honors. Trevor Wregglesworth earned second team honors.

Taylor Ehrke earned second team all-Ski Valley honors on the girls basketball side and Zebony Box earned an honorable mention.
