ACC women come up short in district qualifier

LIVONIA — The Alpena Community College women’s basketball team had their season end on Tuesday night as the Lady Lumberjacks fell to Schoolcraft Community College by a final score of 71-45 in a NJCAA district H qualifying game.

It was the first time in five years that ACC had reached postseason play, but had its tournament stint end quick as Schoolcraft used a huge second quarter to pull away from the Lumberjacks as they outscored ACC 26-6 in the second quarter to take a commanding 40-19 lead into the break.

“We missed some assignments and the second quarter is really what hurt us. The effort was there all night, but Schoolcraft played well and give them credit,” ACC coach Bobby Allen said. “An ACC women’s team hadn’t been here in five years and this group deserved to be here. They never complained and always worked hard and that’s what I’m proud of.”

After building a huge halftime lead, Schoolcraft was able to cruise to victory as they didn’t allow the Lumberjacks to make any sort of comeback the rest of the way.

Morgan Allen led ACC scoring 10 points. Kendra Cole ended a solid career for the Lumberjacks scoring nine points and grabbing eight rebounds.

ACC will likely return eight players from this team and despite a lopsided loss, the experience could be huge for the returners next season.

“There is a good chance we’ll have a good amount of our girls back next year and our success will depend on how they work over the summer and during the offseason,” Allen said. “For our sophomores, they went out with a bang in helping this program get back to the postseason and I’m proud of each and every one of my girls.”
