Onaway comes up short against Bellaire

ONAWAY — With just a few games remaining in the regular season, the Onaway boys basketball team continues to improve and play its best basketball at the right time.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, they needed a near perfect performance to beat the the number four team in Class D, but didn’t quite get it as they fell to Bellaire by a final score of 59-54 on Wednesday.

It was a much different outcome from when the two teams played just 10 days ago as Bellaire throttled Onaway by 33 points.

On Wednesday, the Cardinals held a halftime lead as Josiah Crawford had the duties of guarding Gabe Merriweather and shut him down in the first half, holding him to just five points as Onaway held a 26-21 halftime lead.

“We did a great job defensively on Gabe. To limit one of the best players in the state to just five points in the first half is great. Josiah played on the best games of his career and played great defensively,” Onaway coach Eddy Szymoniak said. “Unfortunately Gabe got hot late and hit some shots that not many other guys can hit and we missed some opportunities as well. We didn’t shoot well at the free-throw line tonight, but I’m happy with the guys effort and how we keep improving at a time of the year when it matters. Despite a disappointing first half of the season, we still have big goals and a lot left to prove.”

Onaway falls to 9-9 overall on the year and 7-7 in conference play.

The Cardinals will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to Johannesburg-Lewiston.

The Braves improve to 12-5 overall on the year and will host Alcona tomorrow.
