Morrison’s to help Hillman basketball teams throughout playoffs

With a combined 35-1 record and recognition in Michigan’s Associated Press polls, the Hillman High basketball teams are hoping to make deep playoff runs once the postseason begins

Morrison’s IGA Foodliner is hopeful too and on Sunday the store will be getting into the spirit of March Madness.

For the third consecutive season, members of the Hillman boys basketball team will sign a March Madness hope at the store. The girls basketball team will join as well and both teams will sign it around noon on Sunday.

The hoop, which is donated by Pepsi, is given to Morrison’s every year and for years manager Doug Morrison simply gave it away. Three years ago, he talked with boys basketball coach Eric Muszynski about doing something different.

“I said, ‘Man, let’s do something different,'” Morrison said. “When the boys come here to sign, it’s always exciting.”

Anyone interested in trying to win the hoop can stop in the store and sign their name for the drawing which will take place on Easter Sunday.

Beginning with district play, Morrison’s will also donate Gatorade to both teams during their playoff runs. Both Hillman coaches will let the store know before each game how many cases they need for a game and the store will donate it.

Morrison, a longtime Hillman hoops fan, said he hasn’t missed a game in at least a dozen years and has a good feeling about both teams chances in March.

“When you’ve got a winning team the gym is full. Our boys pull a good crowd and lots of people go to the games,” Morrison said. “I think one of our teams has a chance to get to East Lansing.”

The Hillman boys are 17-0 after beating Oscoda on Wednesday. The Hillman girls are 18-1 and begins district play later this week.
