Brewer leads Onaway boys past Cardinals
ONAWAY–Keaton Brewer recorded a double-double and the Onaway boys basketball team defeated Johannesburg-Lewiston 65-49 on Thursday.
Onaway (3-4, 2-4 Ski Valley) trailed early, but found its footing in the fourth quarter, outscoring Joburg 26-14.
“Tonight we played decent in the first half, but we didn’t come out with the fire we wanted to,” Onaway coach Eddy Szymoniak said. “In the second half, the team turned it on, especially in the fourth quarter. We played with a lot of energy.”
Brewer had 23 points, 11 rebounds and three steals to lead Onaway and Dakota Cruse added 12 points and seven rebounds. Trevor Wregglesworth had nine points and eight rebounds.
Onaway trailed 15-8 after one quarter, but rebounded to take a 23-18 lead at halftime and led 39-35 after three quarters.
“I couldn’t be happier with this win. This is a step in the right direction,” Szymoniak said.
Fairview 69, Posen 42
FAIRVIEW–Four players scored in double figures and the Fairview boys basketball team powered past Posen on the way to a 69-42 win on Thursday.
Fairview (7-2, 4-2 North Star League) led 19-6 after one quarter and kept pushing its lead from there. The Eagles led 36-21 at halftime and 49-29 after three quarters.
“We had stretches where we played well and stretches where we were sloppy,” Fairview coach Rick Ebert said. “We played well defensively at times and got out and ran pretty good.”
Drake Willobee led Fairview with 16 points and Tylor Ross had 14. Jeremy Fleszar added 12 and Seth Cleeves chipped in with 10.
George Styma led Posen (1-5, 1-4 NSL) with 12 points and Jared Sharpe added 11.
Hale 73, Atlanta 33
HALE–Oliver Rice scored 22 points and Hale got the better of the Atlanta boys basketball team on Thursday, defeating the Huskies 73-33.
Hale (6-1, 5-1 North Star League) led 10-7 after one quarter, but upped its lead to 32-13 at halftime and kept in control from there.
“We played pretty well. The score didn’t reflect how we played and the thing that killed us was turnovers,” Atlanta coach Kevin Haren said.
Atlanta (2-7, 0-6 NSL) was led by Austin Corbin who had 17 points.

BASKETBALL
Hale 71, Atlanta 18
HALE–Olivia Rasch scored 19 points and the Hale girls basketball team defeated Atlanta 71-18 on Thursday.
Tiffany Juergens led Atlanta (1-10, 0-7 North Star League).
Hale earned its first win to improve to 1-8 and is 1-6 in league play.
