Balanced attack leads Alpena past TC West

TRAVERSE CITY–A balanced scoring attack sparked the Alpena High girls basketball team to a 58-47 win over Traverse City West on Friday.

The Titans took an early lead in the first quarter, but Alpena its way back into the game and ultimately went on to win.

Shelby Seaver led Alpena (5-1, 2-0 Big North) with 12 points, Jessica Marwede had 11 and Tori Gentry and Emma Jore each chipped in with eight.

“We had great balance offensively where both our guards and our post kids contributed to our balanced scoring,” Alpena co-coach Steve McCourt said. “Picking up a victory on the road at West is huge for our girls. It is a big confidence builder.”

We are becoming more versatile defensively and our younger kids are really filling some holes created by our six seniors who graduated. We had huge contributions from our bench and are getting some nice defensive contributions from (Taylor) Foster, (Dakota) Prevo, and (Maddie) Voltz. (Kourtney) Jones is doing a great job complimenting Jore in our backcourt. We have really developed some depth on our roster, and are getting ready for a difficult week.”

Alpena has a stretch of three games in four days this week. The Wildcats will host Ogemaw Heights on Tuesday, Tawas on Thursday and Cadillac on Friday.

WRESTLING

Onaway competes in Grayling

GRAYLING–The Onaway wrestling team faced a tough slate of competition Saturday in a team tournament at Grayling. Onaway combined its team with kids from other teams and won one team dual. Of the 24 matches where Onaway put a wrestler on the mat, the Cardinals won 19 of them.

Onaway lost to Manton 45-21; lost to Grayling 51-22; lost to Frankfort 42-28 and defeated Elk Rapids 30-17.

Teddy Peters (130/135) and Matthew Grant (130/135) went 4-0 for Onaway and Coty Ionetz (145/152), Sam Tennant (171/189) and Troy Klein (152/160) went 3-1. Britney Wolgast (112/119) went 1-3.

“Our kids wrestled very physical again today. We have probably the toughest schedule I have ever put together and they are working hard. Using the lessons they have been learning all across the state they showed up today and really showed some teams that we are few in numbers but endless in determination to get better,” Onaway coach Mark Grant said. “I am not just proud of them for winning 19 out of 24 matches today but it was how they did it that was so rewarding. They showed me their best wrestling so far this year and it was a real pleasure to see.”
