Atlanta girls basketball team tops Burt Lake in OT
BURT LAKE- The Atlanta girls basketball team earned its first win of the season, topping Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Academy, 41-39, in overtime Monday.
Burt Lake took an early, 11-4, after the first quarter. At the half, NMCA still had the lead, 18-10. Atlanta took the lead after the third quarter 31-25. At the end of the fourth quarter, the teams were tied at 35-35.
“We really stepped up our defense in overtime,” Atlanta coach Melony Haskin said. “We were taking some good shots.”
Atlanta’s leading scorer was Tiffany Jurgens with 24 points.
Atlanta (1-9) plays in Hale on Thursday.
Cedarville 57,
Posen 20
CEDARVILLE — The Posen girls basketball team lost a non-conference game to Cedarville Monday, 57-20.
Cedarville took a 23-5 at the end of the first quarter, and pushed it to 36-9 at the half. Cedarville led 53-17 at the end of the third quarter..
Posen’s leading scorers were Cami Latulip and Brooke Ciarkowski, both with seven points.
Posen (3-6) hosts Fairview on Friday.
Onaway 55,
Wolverine 13
ONAWAY — The Onaway girls basketball team defeated Wolverine, 55-13, on Monday.
The Cardinals got off to a solid start, leading 13-0 after the first quarter. At halftime, Onaway led by 20 points, 27-7. The Cardinals pushed the lead to 30 points, 40-10 heading into the fourth quarter.
Onaway’s leading scorers on the night were Lauren Welklin with 12 points, Taylor Ehrke with 11 and Kennedy Crawford with 10. Ehrke also has 13 rebounds.
“Overall we played a great game,” Onaway coach Marty Mix said. “We had everybody back and healthy and it was great to get a win after the few losses we’ve faced before tonight.”
Onaway (2-5) plays Friday in Pellston.
BOYS BASKETBALL
BURT LAKE — The Atlanta boys basketball team earned a comeback victory on Monday night defeating Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Academy 49-48.
The Huskies trailed the entire game, but outscored Burt Lake by 12 points in the fourth quarter to win a thriller.
Austin Corbin led Atlanta with 21 points and Tyler Auger added 16 points in the win.
The Huskies improve to 2-6 overall and with travel to Hale on Thursday.
MIO — The Mio boys basketball team lost a close game on Monday night, falling to Fairview by a final score of 39-35.
The Thunderbolts got off to a strong start in the opening quarter, but just couldn’t keep pace with Fairview in the second and fourth quarter as the Eagles outscored Mio 12-5 in the final quarter to come away victorious.
Mio was led by Reilly McMaster who scored a game high 18 points.
Fairview was led by Seth Cleeves who scored 12 of his 14 points on the night in the fourth quarter. Jeremy Fleszar added 11 points.
Mio will travel to Whittemore-Prescott on Thursday.
BOWLING
The Alcona girls bowling team competed in a doubleheader on Saturday. The Tigers took on Bay City John Glenn at Monitor Lanes in Bay City. Alcona split the Baker games, but the Bobcats came out on top with a total of 356 to the Tigers 299. In the game event the Bobcats swept both game with a total of 1677 to the Tigers 1312, ending with a final score of 24-6 in favor or John Glenn. The high game for the Bobcats went to Sally Pudvan with a 209 and the high for the Tigers went to Courtney Jones with a 169.
In the second match the Lady Tigers took on the Tawas Braves at Bay Lanes in Bay City. The Braves swept both Baker games with a total of 260 to the Tigers 236 and split the team event with the Braves coming out on top with a total of 1393 to the Tigers 1303. The final score was Tawas 21-9 in favor of Tawas.
The next game for the Lady Tigers will be on saturday at Hi Skore Lanes in West Branch against the Whittemore-Prescott Cardnials.
