ACC women earn first victory of the season

DETROIT — The Alpena Community College women’s basketball team earned its first victory of the season in thrilling fashion, defeating Wayne County Community College 70-68.

The Lumberjacks were up by as many as 19 points in the first half, but the lead was erased late and Alpena trailed.

The team didn’t trail for long as Rachael Barkley made a clutch baseline layup late to tie the game and then later hit two free throws to give the Lumberjacks a two point lead and the win.

“It was a good win for us. We were up big early and it was unfortunate we let a lead slip away, but we did what we had to do late and the girls came though tonight,” ACC coach Bobby Allen said.

The Lumberjacks were led by Kendra Cole who had 18 points, Morgan Allen added 13 points and Brooke Ellis chipped in with 11 points.

Alpena now sits at 1-6 overall on the year.

The ACC men were not as fortunate as they fell to Wayne by a score of 82-56.

The Lumberjacks got off to a rough start in the first half and tried everything they could to come back, but ran out of gas and fell apart late.

“The guys played better in the second half. It was a physical first half and they just need to keep working hard and hopefully good things will come,” Allen said.

ACC was led by Michael Stuart who scored 13 points and Timothy Hopkins added 11 points.

The Lumberjacks fall to 0-7 on the year.

Both the men and women will be in action on Saturday when they play host to Oakland Community College.
