LINCOLN–The Alcona girls basketball team started the week off on a good note, defeating Atlanta 70-11 in a North Star League matchup.

Now a tougher test lies ahead for the Tigers.

Brittany Decker scored 12 points, Taylor Livingston added 10 and 10 different players scored for the Tigers (1-1, 1-0 NSL), who host Alpena on Wednesday.

The Wildcats topped Alcona 57-44 in Alpena last season.

“It does feel good to get that first win. It’s a conference win too, so that’s important,” Alcona coach Mark Feldhiser said. “We’re .500 now and that’s good (especially) since we’ve got a tough game coming up on Wednesday.”

The Tigers used the game to shore up any deficiencies they saw in their season opener against Tawas and they raced out to a 20-4 lead over one quarter against the Huskies.

Alcona led 39-6 at halftime and 55-9 after three quarters, using a mix of inside baskets and outside shots to top the Huskies.

Kendra LaFave, Rachel Warner and Madison Lane each added eight points for Alcona.

Atlanta moved the ball better than it did last week in its season opener against Wolverine and had some close shots fall just short. But the Huskies were outworked on the glass and struggled against Alcona’s defensive pressure.

“Our defense was much better tonight. We struggled defensively in our first game, but we’re starting to put it together,” Feldhiser said. “One of the things we told the kids was to try to focus on one thing, everyone individually, whether it was outside shooting or posting up.”

Tiffany Juergens led Atlanta with nine points.
