Early deficit hurts Alpena in loss to Braves

TAWAS-The Alpena boys basketball team took a tough loss at Tawas on Tuesday in its season opener, losing to the Braves 51-47.

Tawas pulled ahead in the first quarter, scoring 19 points to Alpena’s four and the Wildcats just couldn’t catch up.

“We played well, but the first quarter did us in,” Alpena boys basketball coach John Pintar said. “But some of my fears about our youth happened. We made a lot of mistakes, so those were what really did us in.”

Lead scorers for Alpena were Nick Skiba with 18 points and Dylan Tucker with 13.

Tawas’ leaders were Bryce Myles with 21 points and Adam Moffatt with 13.

The junior varsity and freshman teams for Alpena won their games. Alpena’s JV team won 47-24 and Logan Pinger had 15 points.

Alpena’s freshman team won 58-6. Clay Donajkowski had 13 points and Zack Zaborney and Garrett Beaulieu both scored eight points for Alpena.

Alpena plays against Cadillac on Friday at home.

Mio 53, Au Gres 30

AU GRES-Ben Lubitz scored 28 points and grabbed 19 rebounds to lead the Mio boys basketball team to a 53-30 win over Au Gres on Monday in its season opener.

Mio (1-0, 1-0 North Star League) led 14-7 after one quarter and 20-11 at halftime. The Thunderbolts only outscored Au Gres 15-13 in the third quarter, but put the game away for good in the final eight minutes, outscoring the Wolverines 18-6.

Trey Thornton added 11 points, five steals and four assists for Mio.

Tyler Jantzi led Au Gres with 13 points.

Mio hosts Fairview on Thursday.

GIRLS

BASKETBALL

Posen 58,

Whittemore-Prescott 18

POSEN-The Posen girls basketball team had a great game against Whittemore-Prescott on Tuesday, winning 58-18.

Posen led 20-6 after the first quarter and was up 38-12 at halftime. The Vikings (2-0, 2-0 North Star League) gained 17 more points in the third quarter, leaving the score at 55-12 until gaining their last points in the fourth quarter, with a score of 58-18 at the final buzzer.

“It was a good game for us to get all the kids in action,” Posen coach Karl Momrik said. “We played extremely well all night long.”

The leading scorers for Posen were Cami LaTulip with 15, Jenna Hincka with 13, Kayla Lenard with nine and Brooke Ciarkowski with eight.

The Vikings play at home against Rogers City on Friday.

Fairview 44, Oscoda 28

OSCODA-The Fairview girls basketball team played a good game against Oscoda on Tuesday, winning 44-28.

Fairview (2-1, 2-0 North Star League) led 14-6 after one quarter and 26-15 at halftime. The Eagles ended the third quarter with a 35-18 lead.

“We played well in the first half,” Fairview coach Marc Winton said. “It meant we had a good lead in the second.”

The high scorers for Fairview were Andrea Ford with 13 points and Alyson Winton with 11.

Oscoda’s Sophia Sheppard scored ten points.

Rogers City 51, Hale 24

ROGERS CITY- The Rogers City girls basketball team won against Hale on Tuesday with a final score of 51-24.

Rogers City had a good lead at the end of the first quarter, pulling ahead with 22-4. The lead continued into halftime as the Hurons led 32-10.

“I’m very happy with how the girls played,” Rogers City coach Gary Bisson said. “They played as a team and were unselfish.”

Rogers City players Taylor Fleming and Hannah Fleming both scored 12 points.

Rogers City plays Posen on the road on Friday.

Alcona 69, Atlanta 11

LINCOLN-TheAlcona girls basketball team won 69-11 against Atlanta on Tuesday, for its first win of the season.

Alcona (1-2, 1-0 North Star League) led 22-0 after one quarter and the lead only grew in the second quarter. The second quarter ended with a score of 33-3 in Alcona’s favor. The third quarter didn’t look much better for Atlanta as Alcona held a 50-7 lead after three quarters of play.

“Everybody was involved in our first win of the year,” Alcona coach Brad Cole said. “Hopefully now we can get back on track.”

Alcona’s leading scorers for the game were Kendra LaFave with 15 points, Brittany Decker with eight points, Torie Harmon with seven points, six rebounds and four assists and Jordan Joyce with six points and three steals.
