Hillman to induct 2nd HOF class

HILLMAN-The Hillman High School Sports Hall of Fame is proud to announce the second class to be inducted into the High School Sports Hall of Fame. This year’s class consists of the high School’s first state champion, one of the first All-State athletes, a two sport All-State athlete, and female All-State scholar athlete.

This year’s inductees are Mark Oswald, Wendell Orm, Sara Davis Vanderveer and the 1992 baseball team, which won a state championship.

This year’s honorees will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Hillman High School. The new inductees will also be honored at halftime of Hillman’s home football game against Oscoda tonight.

The 1992 Hillman state championship baseball team consisted of Michael Achatz, Jory Benac, Michael Cordes, Charlie Davis, Michael Dunleavy, John Frye, Josh Hardies, Greg Jones, Tim Jones, Steve Kazyaka, Aaron Kenyon, Mark McMurray, Mark Oswald, Michael Rouleau, Dave Stewart and Head Coach Dave Checkley. The team was Hillman’s first of many state champion baseball teams.

Wendell Orm (1959) was one of Hillman’s first All-State candidates earning 1st Team All-State in 1958 from the Detroit Free Press in football as an offensive guard and defensive end. Orm was also the anchor on the 440 relay team that set the school record for their time. Orm played baseball and basketball as well.

Mark Oswald (1995) was a freshmen on the 1992 state champion baseball team and continued to excel as a student-athlete during his years at Hillman. Oswald lettered in basketball, football, and baseball. During his time Oswald accomplished the rare feat of receiving All-State recognition in more than one year and in more than one sport. In 1994, Oswald was All-State in baseball, winning another state championship and continued his success in 1995 being named All-State in both baseball and football. In football Oswald was also selected as Dream Team All-State in 1995.

Sara Davis Vanderveer (1996) was a member of the first state runner-up softball team. During her time at Hillman, Sara played volleyball and softball for four years and also played basketball. Sara earned all-district for four years of softball and all-regional honors twice.

In her senior year she received All-State honors in softball and received the state Scholar Athlete Award, received the Michigan Competitive Scholarship and also received a scholarship to play softball at Alpena Community College.
