Alpena 11U goes 2-0 in pool play; 9U team goes 1-2

GALESBURG, ILL.-The Alpena Huron Shores 11U baseball team moved to 2-0 in pool play on Friday with a 17-5 victory over Connersville, Ind. in 4 innings during Cal Ripken Ohio Valley Regional play.

Alpena jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the top of the first inning and two more in the the top of the second inning led by singles from Kyle VanDusen, Owen Limback, Colby Plowman and Jordan Schultz.

Connersville came back with four runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Alpena pulled away after that sending 10 men to the plate in both the third and fourth innings led by singles from Chris DeRocher, Aidan Goike and Riley Arlt. Alpena scored four runs in the third inning and added seven more in the fourth inning.

Schultz led Alpena with four RBIs and Goike and Plowman each had three.

VanDusen pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit and striking out four to shut down Connersville and seal the victory.

Alpena played Wabash Valley in its final pool play game on Friday night, but results were unavailable at press time.

Alpena 9U finishes pool play at 1-2

CONNERSVILLE, Ind.-The Alpena Huron Shores Babe Ruth 9U baseball team finished pool play at 2-1 after losing to Matton, Ill. 5-2 on Friday in Cal Ripken Ohio Valley Regional play.

Alpena led Mattoon 2-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, but things fell apart for Alpena in the bottom of the fifth inning with errors giving Mattoon the chance to pull ahead for good.

“I was truly impressed up until that point, everyone did their job, but could not quite get it done in the end,” 9U coach Dave Nowak said.

Ryan Lee, Blaise Keller, Ben Nowak, Noah Marquardt and Everett Zann each had a hit in the game and Marquardt’s hit was a double.

Pitching by Keegan Hahn and Noah Marquardt was solid as usual and Alpena made some nice defensive plays including three center field catches by Blaise Keller and another by Everett Zann in left field.

Alpena’s best two games will be used to seed the team in single elimination play which begins today.

Alpena opened pool play on Thursday with a 12-4 loss to Brownstown, Ind.

Brownstown took a 3-0 lead after the first inning and cruised from there.

Scoring for Alpena was Noah Marquardt who walked and Logan Momrik who singled in the third and scored on a two-run double by Blaise Keller.

In the fifth inning, Marquardt singled and stole his way home while Ben Nowak reached base on balls drew a throw to third base and stole home.

Alpena had several defensive errors in the loss. Marquardt pitched the first three innings and Keegan Hahn pitched the final two innings. Hahn was MVP with a double and a triple.

Alpena rebounded win an 11-10 win on Thursday night over Connersville.

Alpena jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning and added to its lead in every inning. Connersville pulled to within one, 10-9, after four innings, but Alpena was able to stay ahead for the win.

Scoring in the first inning was Marquardt, Keller and Hahn who all reached base on balls. Ryan Lee had two RBIs in the first with a solid double and was the game’s MVP.

In the second inning, Bentley Brooks walked and rounded the bases on passed balls while Keller went to first on a walk and drew several throws during that play to get around the bases.

Alpena scored five runs in the fourth inning on walks to Keller, and Cooper Bright, Lee was hit by a pitch and singles by Hahn and Nowak.

Connersville struck out the side in the fifth inning, but not before Marquardt reached on a base on balls and stole his way around for the game winning run.

Hahn pitched the first three innings and Marquardt pitched the final three innings in the win.
