Police: Michigan State freshman from China dies

August 25, 2014
Associated Press

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — East Lansing Police say alcohol was likely a factor in the death of a Michigan State University freshman from China.

Police say 19-year-old Jiayi Dai of Beijing was found unresponsive in an apartment Saturday morning. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say foul play isn't suspected and excessive alcohol consumption was likely involved.

Dai had recently arrived on campus for international student orientation before starting her freshman year.

The director of the university's International Students and Scholars Office says a faculty member from China called Dai's family Saturday.

The university explains legal alcohol limits during international student orientation but doesn't say where to go for help if someone has had too much to drink. The director says the university will probably do so in the future.
