Soccer-golf hybrid sport gaining foothold in US

SALEM TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A soccer-golf hybrid sport has gained a foothold in the U.S.

From California to Michigan, golf course operators say FootGolf is not only helping them financially, but it's drawing a younger and more diverse customer base.

Philip Taucher (TOW'-chuhr) helps to manage a newly created FootGolf course at Fox Hills west of Detroit. He says the sport has been "a huge success" financially and it has brought in players who have never visited a golf course.

Fox Hills added larger FootGolf holes that are 21 inches in diameter as well as separate flagsticks.

Other than that, the course looks the same. And the rules are pretty much the same as golf.

Players try to advance a soccer ball into the cup in the fewest number of strokes, or kicks.
