Alpena Community College Foundation held its 18th annual Robert M. Granum Memorial Scramble for Scholarships on Aug. 23 at the River's Edge Golf Club. Despite the drizzly and foggy start, the golf tournament was a huge success, netting a total of $18,869 for the ACC Foundation scholarship program.
A total of 83 golfers lent their support and participated in the ACC Foundation's signature fundraising event. Since its inception in 1996, the tournament has generated a total of $314,869 and provided many students with much-needed scholarship support.
Winning with a score of 55 was the team of Jack McCoy, Todd Skiba, Bob Centala and Harvey Marlatt. The winning foursome earned a golf package to the exclusive Kingsley Club located in Kingsley.
Winning by regression with a score of 59, second place honors went to the foursome of Mark Himes, Jim Grulke, Don Krajniak and Mike Klimek, and they earned a golf package at any Boyne property.
With a score of 59, third place honors went to Phil Straley, Bill Peterson, Adam Peterson and Jerry Skiba. The foursome won a golf package to Black Lake Golf Club in Onaway.
With a score of 59, the best score for a mixed team went to the foursome of Jim Johnston, Bill Yockey, Sue Mulvena and Jorden Susewitz winning a round of golf at Thunder Bay Golf Resort.
Jack McCoy was named the "champion putter" after winning the putting contest in a putt-off and earned a one-night stay and dinner at Odawa Casino in Petoskey.
Of the remaining teams, four random drawings were conducted and lucky golfers won golf packages to River's Edge Golf Club, Lost Lake Woods Club and Stoney Links Golf Course.
Lafarge served as the tournament's corporate sponsor for the 13th consecutive year. Lunch was provided by Alpena Power Company and Harvey and Joelle Wartosky of The Wartosky Group.
Gene Skiba of Alpena Buick-GMC sponsored a hole-in-one competition and offered a 2014 Buick Encore. Alpena Agency Inc. also sponsored a hole-in-one competition and offered a $10,000 cash prize.
In addition, Top O' Michigan Insurance sponsored a putting contest and offered a $1,000 cash prize. Beverage sponsors included Alpena Beverage Company, Coca-Cola, and Huron Distributors.
ACC Foundation Executive Director Penny Boldrey said, "We've had tremendous support from area businesses who served as hole, cart and prize sponsors. We couldn't do this event without them."
