Team Alpena's 65+ men's doubles tennis team recently visited the clay courts of Birchwood Golf and Tennis Club, Harbor Springs to defend their 2013 team championship for northern Michigan.
During the two-day competition, Team Alpena came away with the District Championship 8 matches to 1.
"The tournament again brought together for Team Alpena players from each side of the state to challenge our competition at Birchwood for the District Championship. The result was an opportunity to build new friendships and compete very successfully for the win," Alpena team captain Don Newport said.
Team Alpena’s 65+ men’s doubles team recently repeated as district champions after winning a district competition in Harbor Springs. Representing Alpena were from left to right: Karsten Boerger, Fred Gagnon, Paul Vernier, Frank Hagelshaw, Don Newport, team captain, John Rasmussen and Fred Ball.
Newport also noted that while the final score was 8-1, five of the matches went to third set tie breakers with Alpena winning these close matches 4-1.
"The level of competition was simply excellent and again proves the wisdom of adding this age group to the USTA tournament schedule," Birchwood Club Pro Dennis Green said. "Tennis is intended to be a lifelong sport and Birchwood looks forward to hosting future Northern Michigan District Championships at its' very unique, 10 court, clay site." Green concluded.
