In its quest for another state title, Alpena's 10U baseball team started off the 2014 Cal Ripken State Tournament with a bang.
Alpena scored early and often on the way to a 40-0 win in three innings over Central U.P. in the tournament opener on Friday at Sabourin Field. Alpena later added a mercy-rule win over Clinton Valley on Friday night. Alpena won the 9U state title last year and returned several players to this year's 10U squad.
Alpena finished with 30 hits and every player had at least one hit. Mat Thompson led the hit parade with five hits and two RBIs. Alex Cadarette had four hits and seven RBIs. Ben Nowak had four hits and six RBIs. Blaise Keller had four hits and two RBI. Cooper Bright and Keegan Hahn each had three hits and two RBIs.

Alpena got rolling early in the first inning as Hahn hit the first of two inside-the-park home runs to give Alpena a 2-0 lead. Everett Zann added an inside-the-park home run later in the inning and Alpena finished its turn at the plate with a 12-0 lead.
Each Alpena player scored at least one run and seven of Alpena's starters scored at least four times.
In the second inning, Alpena send 33 batters to the plate and collected 21 hits. Nowak and Cadarette were the catalysts for Alpena's offense. Nowak batted four times and hit a two-run inside-the-park home run, an RBI double, an RBI single and another RBI double. Cadarette batted four times and hit a two-run single, another two-run single and a bases clearing triple.
Alpena will continue tournament play today against Huron Valley Maroon at 5:30 p.m.
