Presque Isle County has a number of celebrations planned on and around Independence Day, including three different places to watch fireworks.
Onaway, Presque Isle and Rogers City each have something planned, either for July Fourth or the weekend to follow. All three events include activities like games and parades, and end with fireworks at dusk.
In Onaway, Independence Day will be celebrated with kids games from 10-11 a.m. at Maxon Field, a kiddie parade at 11 a.m. and a grand parade to follow at 12 p.m., according to a schedule of events from city hall. The parade includes a water fight between members of area fire departments.
New this year is the Dancing Hippo Arts and Crafts Festival, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Onaway Courthouse lawn. The event had been held for many years at the Bearinger Township Hall, and has been taken over by the Onaway Area Historical Society after former organizers Jim and Irene Seelye retired, according to the event's Facebook page. The show continues on July 5-6.
Friday's activities in Onaway continue at 11 a.m. with a chicken dinner by VFW Post 5857, a salad bar by St. Paul's Catholic Church and an ice cream social at the Methodist Church. Fireworks begin at dusk, launched from a field by the Onaway Airport. In case of rain, fireworks will be postponed to Saturday at dusk.
Presque Isle Township will celebrate the nation's independence by holding its annual parade at the New Presque Isle Lighthouse on Saturday at 10 a.m., with games and events to follow, Township Supervisor Brent Koel said. Those include a picnic at Garrity Hall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Fireworks will be launched over Presque Isle Harbor at dusk, Koel said.
The Rogers City Area Chamber of Commerce is planning its annual Family Fun Day for Saturday at Lakeside Park, chamber Director Alexa Donakowski said. Starting at 12 p.m., there will be kids games with prizes, a dunk tank and a magic show with Ronald McDonald at 1 p.m.
The Petoskey Steel Drum Band is "back by popular demand," Donakowski said, playing from 7-8:30 p.m. at the park band shell. There will be raffles and prize giveaways at the concert as well. Fireworks start at dusk.
