GAYLORD-The inaugural East-West All-Star Classic game took place on Saturday which pitted the best boys and girls basketball players from the east and the west side of the state against each other for some of the most exciting basketball action the area's seen in years.
"It was an outstanding game, high flying game, pretty good defense by everybody in an All-Star game and it was as tight as it could get," East boys coach Eric Muszynski said.
The East boys beat West in a tight 63-59 game. Brett Maser from Au Gres led the way with a double-double of 16 points and 18 rebounds. He was named the boys MVP.
Several area girls took part in the East-West All-Star game at Gaylord St. Mary on Saturday. These girls included (left to right): Hillman’s Jensen Tchorzynski, Rogers City’s Courtney Streich, Posen’s Korynn Hincka and Onaway’s Erika Price. Hincka was the MVP of the tournament with 28 points and 18 rebounds.
Alcona's Carson Jamieson pitched in with 12 points while Alpena's Andy Marwede scored eight. Marwede scored two free-throws in the waning seconds of the game to put it away for good.
Zach Hankins from Charlevoix won the slam dunk contest with 40 points while Marwede came in second with 39.
The East girls team easily best West in a 61-46 rout led by Korynn Hincka. Hincka had a double-double with 28 points and 18 rebounds. She was named the MVP of the game, but received solid support from her teammates.
"Brooke Sendo from Arenac Eastern did a terrific job defensively against Kari Borowiak (All-Stater from Gaylord St. Mary) and it was one of the keys to the victory over West," said East girls coach Karl Momrik.
Borowiak won the three-point contest, with Erika Price from Onaway coming in second.
Event organizer Spark Nitchman, from Michigan Interscholastics Connection, considered the event "a total success" and that the MIC has "every intention of continuing it next year."
"If I was ever invited to do it again, it would definitely be something I would look into doing," Muszynski said. "It was an honor and I think it was pretty sweet to be part of the first All-Star game in the area."
