Alpena Regional Medical Center is introducing the Arthritis Foundation's Walk with Ease program; a community-based physical activity and self-management education program.
The ARMC Walk With Ease program is led by a certified instructor and meets three times per week for six weeks, each designed to be relaxing and enjoyable. In addition to the self-paced group walks, each session includes health-related discussion topics. All members of the program receive a Walk With Ease guidebook that provides information, support, and tools needed to help set and achieve goals, including new customized walk-for-fitness routines, stretching exercises, and heart-rate monitoring techniques. The program is no charge to the participants.
ARMC Walk With Ease begins June 10 and will meet every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for six weeks. Two group sessions are available, Session 1 will meet at 7:30 a.m. at the Alpena Mall and Session 2 will meet at 10:30 a.m. at Northern Lights Arena. Walks will be indoor or outdoor depending on weather and walking abilities.
Only 30.7 percent of all adults engage in activity that is enough to be considered regular in terms of frequency and duration. Sedentary lifestyles increase health risks as patients grow older. Something as simple as walking at least two hours per week can reduce your risk of death from heart disease by 34 percent.
The ARMC Walk With Ease program can help increase the range of motion in the affected joint, strengthen muscles, build endurance, improve balance and flexibility, reduces joint pain, and helps combat fatigue. Arthritis is a painful inflammation of one or more joints, which causes stiffness. While it may seem like a good idea to rest the painful areas, it can make the pain, stiffness, and overall disease worse.
Walk with Ease is for people with arthritis or other physically limiting chronic health condition, those young and old, male and female, fit or not-so-fit. Or for the person who needs the confidence and motivation to get moving!
