Tom Tolen, his wife Amanda, and their two daughters, Jenna and Justice, look at the new ladder truck and tour the Alpena Township Fire Department Station 3 during an open house Tuesday. The department held the open house at the station, on M-32 behind the DNR building Tuesday, for the public to get a look at the station and equipment. The station is a work in progress, and has been operating for just over a year. Sgt. John Clements said the open house was held to let the community know where the station is located, and that there is a faster availability of help in the M-32 area thanks to the West Station. 'We wanted to have something to the West to have a faster response time in this area,' Clements said. 'The station being here helps with insurance rates, and will allow us to provide a better service here.' The west station is not a 24 hour station, but will allow equipment to be called to a scene quicker than bringing it from the north or south stations. An ambulance and a fire engine are housed on location.
