ALPENA - There is going to be a special Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans event in Alpena during September that will be a weekend dedicated to the men and women who served in the war.
In advance of the event there will be the 5K Redneck Rush Mud run/obstacle course, which will offer a unique challenge for people of all fitness levels, as well as raise funds for September's event.
The mud run will take place on June 7 at the Alpena County Fairgrounds and will be the second year the event has taken place. A special course, which promises to be wet and muddy, will be in place to accommodate the runners attempting to conquer it. Event Coordinator Andy White said last year's mud run was a success and he expects this one to be as well. He said there will be some minor tweaks made to give the track a different look and new challenges for the participants.
"It is in line with an adventure race, but we have it set up so anyone can do it, no matter what their level of fitness is," White said. "It is a great excuse to get out and have a good time. Last year we had 110 runners and everyone had a good time to we decided to do it again. We have changed the way some of the obstacles are placed and added new ones so it will not be the same as last year and the runners will have something new to take on."
A salute to the Vietnam vets was supposed to take place during the 2014 Wings Over Alpena Air Show, but after it was announced the air show would not take place, White said having a tribute for the veterans was something that still needed to take place. The Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans event will take place Sept. 26-28 and will include some special happenings for the veterans and the public to enjoy.
"We have partnered with the (Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan), which will have the Michigan traveling Vietnam Memorial on display, and wanted to honor them even if there isn't an air show," White said. "We are working on a parade for that Saturday, which will end at Bay View Park, and there will be family friendly events there, as well as music and vendors. It will be a good time for everyone and really show the veterans from Vietnam what they mean to us."
