Many people will suffer with loss of program

May 8, 2014
The Alpena News

For the last 44 years, Northeast Michigan residents who experience a mental illness or developmental disability had the opportunity in the Monday Nigh Activities Program. this program was funded using general funds of Northeast Michigan Community Mental Health Authority (NeMCMHA). As a result of the most recent budget cuts to the general fund allocations to NeMCMHA (54 percent reduction) imposed by the govern and legislature, NeMCMHA is no longer able to fund this program. Through the years, commuinty activities and presentations were provided by local business and organizations such as: The Besser Museum, Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, Thunder Bowl Lanes, Alpena Civic Center, Alpena County Library, Thunder Bay Theatre, VFW, St. Bernard Parish, St. Paul Parish, Gals and Gents Square Dance Club, Alpena Antique Tractor Club, and 4D Second Street Dance Studio to name just a few. Approximately 45-60 individuals participated in these weekly activities which included a month "birthday bingo" which was always well attended.
