Unfortunately, illegal drugs remain a dark side to the world in which we live.
And, Northeast Michigan is not immune to that world.
The Huron Undercover Narcotics Team recently released its annual report. It showed that marijuana, whether it be in plant form, processed or synthetic, was the most confiscated drug this past year. Methamphetamine was next.
While one can't necessarily make the correlation that those are the most used, or most prevalent in the region, it is safe to say both are more accessible than we would care to have them be. And, as long as they are, they negatively impact the quality of life for each of us.
It's hard to believe HUNT has been in existence now for 23 years. In that period, it has removed approximately $8.8 million worth of drugs from the region, confiscated 436 illegal firearms, arrested 1,836 felons and 537 fugitives.
We wish for the day that a special force like the HUNT team no longer would be needed. Until that day arrives, however, we're glad it's in place, helping to make our communities a little safer and secure.
