ALPENA - The Alpena Regional Medical Center Board of Trustees accepted the Steelworkers Contract with the Local 206A, ratified on Monday by members of the union, at its meeting Tuesday night. Local 206A is made up of non-RN nursing staff, which includes approximately 175 members.
Chief Executive Officer Karmon Bjella said the hospital would not issue any further information on the contract and was looking into perhaps releasing a joint statement with the union upon further discussion with its members.
The members of the union previously had voted down the contract agreement, and then accepted it Monday with some delay in the startup of certain non-disclosed items within the contract. Board members accepted the contract, with Trustee Beach Hall expressing his congratulations to the staff and the local union on reaching an agreement.
"The board generally tries to be ready to accept it quickly so it can be implimented, Bjella said. "The official end of the contract was in March ... and planning starts quite early."
According to Marketing Manager Staci Chroninger, negotiations have been going on with the union for over six months.
The board also passed two resolutions awarding family practice physician Avery J. Aten, MD, and orthopedic surgeon Bruce R. Ohmart, MD, acknowledgement for their exceptional contributions to the health care of the residents of Northeast Michigan.
