Its Tuesday night 66-28 win over Pellston in a class D regional semifinal was a lot like last year's 69-25 win over Pellston.
"Pellston came out and played real hard and they played pretty well, but we did what we had to do for the win," Posen coach Karl Momrik said.
The win advances Posen to a regional final matchup with Brimley at 7 p.m. Thursday in Pellston.
Posen started the game quickly: it scored 20 straight points to take a 20-0 lead with 1:14 left to go in the quarter.
The Vikings were led by the concentrated attack of Korynn Hincka and Austin Sharpe. Hincka used her height to pull down rebounds and block multiple shots.
She also led the Vikings in the first quarter with 11 points and had 31 for the game.
Pellston struggled to hit shots against Posen's press. Posen often trapped Hornets' players at half court with the double team and forced awkward passes and shots.
Pellston's Hanah Carter hit a three pointer with 10 seconds left in the first quarter, but Posen took a 20-4 lead into the second quarter.
The Hornets may have been stung by Posen's offense, but they played good defense. They used tight man-to-man to disrupt passing lanes and force full court passes that sailed out of bounds.
"It wasn't our best first half effort. We came out a bit slow. Thankfully, we came out a lot stronger in the second half," Momrik said.
Pellston's defensive efforts were for naught as the Vikings held it to two more points for the rest of the quarter.
The Vikings offensive drought lifted as it figured out Pellston's defense. The Vikings scored nine more points, including three straight Hincka buckets, to take a 32-9 lead into the third quarter.
If the Vikings weren't playing their best ball in the first half, they came out strongly in the second half. They outscored Pellston 20-14 to maintain a steady lead.
The Hornets' offense played its best ball in the third quarter, helped by a pair of treys from Kelly Lewis.
The Vikings were led in the third by Hincka with nine points. Jenna Hincka scored three for Posen. The Vikings took a 53-23 lead into the fourth.
The fourth quarter was another low scoring period for Pellston as Posen continued to control the game defensively.
Up next for Posen will be Brimley, a team the Vikings are used to facing in the playoffs.
"Brimley is really good. They've won 21 and they're big. They just know how to get the rebound and work the boards. We're ready for the challenge," Momrik said.
