TAWAS-The Alpena girls basketball team ran into a spirited Tawas squad on its Senior Night on Wednesday and lost to the Braves 55-46.
Jenna Szostak scored 24 points for the Braves (7-10), who jumped out to a 9-0 lead to begin the contest and held off a few Alpena rallies for the win.
"We're getting better, we're doing a lot of good things," Tawas coach Todd Kaems said. "They've got a nice inside-outside tandem and for awhile we had to pick our poison."
Alpena (5-14) trailed 31-17 at halftime, but fought back in the third quarter, narrowing Tawas' lead to 38-34 before the Braves hit a couple of three-pointers and pulled away again.
"We played hard, but the ball didn't bounce our way," Alpena coach Dan Arsenault said. "These last few games have been similar."
Elizabeth Trelfa led Alpena with 13 points and Adrianna Hatch added 11.
Alpena hosts Petoskey on Friday.
Alpena's JV team beat Tawas 55-13. Chloe Ferguson led Alpena with 10 points and Caitlynn Dzuris added eight points.
Au Gres 45
AU GRES-The Hillman boys basketball team won its 12 game in a row and clinched a share of the North Star League title with a 56-45 win over Au Gres on Wednesday.
Hillman (16-1, 9-0 NSL) led 19-6 after one quarter, but held off a tough effort from the Eagles who eventually tied the game 37-37 after three quarters.
"At one point in the second quarter, we were up by 13 and we just slowly started letting them back into the game," Hillman coach Eric Muszynski said. "It was a seesaw all night, but we pulled away early in the third quarter."
Ty Jones paced Hillman with 16 points, Mason VanPamel and Mike Klein each had 11 points and Brenden Zimmer had seven. Dylan Ross added five points, five steals and seven rebounds.
Brett Maiser led Au Gres with 19 points.
The Tigers have clinched only their third league title in school history and can win the title outright with a win over Posen next Thursday.
"That's been one of our goals and hopefully we can finish it out," Muszynski said.
Forest Area 68
FIFE LAKE-The Onaway boys basketball team pulled out a nailbiter on Wednesday against Fife Lake Forest Area, topping the Trojans 69-68.
Joe O'Bradovich led Onaway (13-4) with 33 points and 16 rebounds and Carlos Bautista added 21 points and 13 rebounds.
Onaway trailed 54-40 after three quarters, but roared back in the fourth quarter, outscoring Forest Area 29-14.
"In the fourth quarter we put some pressure on them and played great team defense," Onaway coach Eddy Szymoniak said. "We went back to basics and pounded it down low with Joe and Carlos."
Onaway trailed 13-11 after one quarter but led 29-26 at halftime.
Onaway hosts Pellston on Friday.
Alcona 57, Hale 42
HALE-Trenton LaVergne scored 25 points and the Alcona boys basketball team topped Hale 57-42 on Wednesday.
Dawson Forsythe added 10 points for the Tigers.
Alcona jumped out to a 21-2 lead after one quarter and cruised from there, leading 38-18 at halftime and 51-31 after three quarters.
