TRAVERSE CITY- The Alpena boys basketball team staged a comeback against Traverse City West to win 72-70 on Monday for its 14th straight win.
Alpena (14-1, 9-1 Big North) sealed the deal when Brad Styma picked up a steal and passed to Andy Marwede. Marwede scored on a putback with two seconds left to take the win.
"We struggled a lot tonight, but we perservered. We were down seven at the half and down seven at the beginning of the fourth. We kept chipping away and made the key plays when we needed to down the stretch," Alpena coach John Pintar said.
Alpena's win guarantees a share of the conference title.
The Wildcats were led by Marwede with 10. Tyler Pintar and Cody Tucker had 13 each while Styma had 10.
Cheboygan was led by Alex Scott with 18.
Alpena hosts Tawas on Wednesday.
Alpena's junior varsity team lost 61-49. It was led by Caleb Myers with 17 while Joe Ayala scored 10.
Alpena's freshmen team lost 58-34. It was led by Trevor Roznowski with 12 and Jacob Vought had seven.
CHEBOYGAN- The Alpena girls basketball team almost staged a comeback against Cheboygan on Monday, but just couldn't get the win, losing 69-46.
Alpena trailed 30-18 at the half, but tied it up at the end of the third.
The Wildcats ran into foul trouble when the Chiefs got the double bonus halfway through the fourth. Cheboygan went 17-for-24 at the line.
Alpena (5-13) was led by Lexi Smith with 15 while Elizabeth Trelfa pitched in 10.
"We had a real good comeback and the kids played hard, but we just ended up coming up short," Alpena coach Dan Arsenault said.
Alpena travels to Tawas on Wednesday.
The WIldcats junior varsity team picked up a 42-23 win, with Elise Leeck scoring 14.
Posen 50, Au Gres 30
AU GRES- The Posen girls basketball team continued its winning streak on Monday after topping Au Gres 50-30.
Posen led 19-4 after the first quarter and 31-14 at the half. It pulled into a 46-23 lead after three.
Korynn Hincka led Posen (19-0, 11-0 North Star League) with 30 points while Ashley Meyers had 13. Emily Jo Wright led Au Gres with 11.
"We went through the whole bench and everybody got some playing time. Good game to get everybody involved in," Posen coach Karl Momrik said.
Posen hosts Fairview on Thursday for the chance to end its regular season undefeated.
FAIRVIEW-The Fairview girls basketball team routed Atlanta 62-14 on Monday to improve its record to 11-7.
The Eagles led 23-6 after the first quarter and 38-6 at the half. Fairview continued to pull away in the third with a 52-9 lead.
Logan Winton led Fairview with 12 points while Alyson Winton had 10. Joanna Wiedbrauk pitched in nine.
Atlanta was led by Lacey Ferguson with nine.
