Besser Museum presents Art History Conversation Series

The Treaty of Saginaw, an original 1927 oil painting by Percy Ives, is currently on exhibit at the Besser Museum.

This historically significant painting, purchased by the museum in 1984, portrays the 1819 grand council meeting held in the Saginaw region where Gov. Lewis Cass and 114 Chippewas of Saginaw signed the Treaty of Saginaw. The treaty ceded more than six million acres in Michigan, which included the mouth of the Thunder Bay River.

Setting this exhibit initiated conversations among museum staff and sparked the inspiration for a special presentation to be held Feb. 11-13.

It is hoped that this Art History Conversation Series will help museum visitors to gain an understanding of the nuances in this important piece of art.
