ALPENA - Over 100 FFA members from Alpena, Ogemaw Heights, Whittemore-Prescott, Alcona and Standish participated in the Region VI, District 3 Leadership contests at Alpena High School Wednesday.
Contests ranged from group participation and pair presentations such as agricultural issues, demonstration and greenhand conduct of meetings, to individual contests like extemporaneous public speaking, creed speaking and job interview.
"The students worked very hard researching issues and preparing for the contests," Alpena FFA adviser Melissa Smith said. "There are about 20 students in each chapter, and districts are held each year throughout the state at the same time in each district."
The district leadership contests were spread throughout the high school in different classrooms and the commons, allowing rooms for student preparation, and three judges were at each contest scoring the different chapter presentations.
This year members from Alpena FFA placed in four events. Alexis Woodward, Jessiaca Shoville, Jalen Troy, Miranda McDonald, Madisson Ellis and Amanda Russell took third in agricultural issues; Dustin Briggs took first in extemporaneous public speaking; Cassie Dubie, Demi Oliver, Dakota Gersewski, Hunter McConnell, Draven Chism, Kari Przeslawski and Mariah Kranjnik took second in greenhand conduct of meetings; and Caitlin Borke took third in job interview.
