TBJH students hear career presentations

ALPENA - Thunder Bay Junior High students participated in Career Day Wednesday with 24 presenters ranging from legal assistants to the armed services and entrepreneurs. Each grade was split into groups, and each group attended four presentations. Students rotated from room to room to listen to the presentations and ask questions about each profession.

"At this age students haven't decided what they want to do with their life yet," teacher Beckie Thomson said. "Getting to look at multiple careers helps them decide and look into different fields."

Students in Thomson's class listened to presentations from Jessica and Jamie Hatch who are co-owners of Take 5 Deli, blog and entrepreneur a YouTube channel called Gone to the Snow Dogs.

The couple talked about the difficulties of running a YouTube channel and gaining a following, and how opening the deli turned into a family success story. One of the highlights of their presentation was bringing in one of their snow dogs, Shelby, who is one of three husky's starring in the Hatch's YouTube videos.

Jessica explained to the students how starting a channel opened up different avenues for them, such as selling the brand of leashes and collars they use for the dogs, and promoting the food they feed their animals.

"It was great to see the students so involved in the presentations," Thomson said. "They were paying very close attention to the information. We're lucky to have our (parent advisory council) who sets up all the speakers and volunteer their time to help with the event. They are a great group and the students enjoy learning from people who are working in these different jobs."
