ALPENA - The Alpena Police Department has arrested a suspect in the theft of more than $8,000 worth of precious metals from Genesee Valley Gold and Silver Store last August.

Det. Sgt. Steve Davis said the 26-year-old Alpena man has a lengthy criminal history, and at least one more suspect could be involved.

According to reports, the theft in a strip mall in the 400 block of S. Ripley Blvd. was discovered early in the morning when an employee coming to work at an adjacent business saw the store window was smashed in. The gold buying company closed their doors shortly after the incident.

The same suspect in the Genesee case also was recently charged with a May 2013 break in at the McRae Park concession stand, Davis said.

Some of those stolen items were found at a home where the suspect frequently stayed.

The suspect, who was not identified, remains in the Alpena County Jail on a four-count warrant, and bond was set at $25,000.

Davis said the suspect was notified he could be sentenced as a habitual offender, which would increase any time served in prison.

Police Chief Joel Jett credited the arrest to one of the investigators, Patrol Officer Chet Spencer.

"Sometimes you just need to be patient as people start to talk and the leads come in," Jett said.
