DESBARATS, Toronto-The Alpena hockey team's weekend trip to Canada netted it two wins against the C.A.S.S. hockey team.
It was 4-2 on Friday and 4-3 on Saturday.
Jared Plume picked up two goals both nights. Ryan Spencer had a goal each night while Tait Froggett had a goal on Saturday night.
According to coach Pete Doubek, the Canadian rink created a unique challenge for his team.
"The corners were at almost 90 degree angles, so the games were a lot different for us," he said. "It was pretty challenging, but we'd absolutely be interested in going again."
The Wildcats (9-7-1) host Cadillac on Friday.
Alpena 6th place
MIO-The Alpena wrestling team participated in an 11 team tournament on Saturday in Mio and picked up a sixth place finish.
Ogemaw Heights won the tournament, while Whittemore-Prescott came in fourth and Mio came in fifth.
"We did okay. Even some of our younger guys that didn't medal won matches. Overall, we did a pretty good job," Alpena coach Jake Stenz said.
R.J. Centala (145) got first place in his weight and was named "Most Outstanding Wrestler" of the tournament. Dakota Patterson (152) also picked up a first place finish.
Other placers included Daron Mathia (130) at third, Jason Frank (130) at fourth, Emry Zarins (145) at fourth, Felix Suszek (215) at fourth, Austin Hawks (285) at third and Josh Lafebvre (285) at fourth.
Alpena travels to Traverse City on Wednesday and to Gaylord on Saturday, to take place in the Northern Michigan Championships. 34 Michigan teams are invited to this tournament every year.
Rogers City 3-2
PETOSKEY-The Rogers City wrestling squad (22-6) traveled to Petoskey on Saturday to compete in the Petoskey Duals Tournament.
The Hurons lost its first match to Roscommon 39-33. It beat Benzie Central 43-21 in its second match and Traverse City St. Francis 54-18 in its third.
The fourth match pitted Rogers City against Petoskey. The Hurons lost 51-27, but won its fifth match 51-25 against the Manistee Chippewas.
Jacob Sobeck (145) and Andrew Selke (215) went 5-0 for the day. Jared LaFleche (171) and Cameron Urban (140) went 4-1 while Jack Ryan (152) went 3-1.
Tommy Vogelheim (103), Justin Salie (125), Cole Henry (140) and Austin Bober (160) all went 3-2 while Tristan Baller (112) went 2-3.
Rogers City hosts a meet on Wednesday.
