SAULT STE. MARIE-Andy Marwede scored 25 points and the Alpena boys basketball team edged past Sault Ste. Marie in overtime on Monday 63-59.
Alpena (4-1) trailed 36-35 entering the fourth quarter, but outscored the Blue Devils 16-15 to force the extra period with a 51-51 deadlock. Alpena had the lead late in the quarter, but the Blue Devils forced overtime with a long three-pointer in the final seconds.
The Wildcats buckled down in overtime and outscored Sault 12-8.
"All night it was a struggle," Alpena coach John Pintar said. "It was one of those weird ones where we were in control, but they were making just enough shots (to stay close). (Before overtime) I told them I liked how they were playing, but we have to win ugly."
Tyler Pintar added 14 points for Alpena and Cody Tucker had 12.
Despite a slow start, the Wildcats led 17-12 after the first quarter. Sault charged back in the second quarter to force a 25-25 tie at halftime.
"We couldn't buy a shot and really struggled on the offensive end," Pintar said. "In the second half we started to take control a little bit."
Terrance Fuller led the Blue Devils with 15 points.
Alpena's JV team lost 58-36 to Sault and Braeden Werth led Alpena with 10 points.
Alpena's freshman team beat the Blue Devils 55-31. Jacob Vought led Alpena with 16 points and Garret Fessler added eight.
The Wildcats play at Tawas tonight.
Mio 62, Oscoda 26
MIO-The Mio boys basketball team jumped out to a 13-4 lead after one quarter against Oscoda on Monday and never looked back, topping the Owls 62-26.
Ben Lubitz led Mio (5-1, 5-1 North Star) with 26 points and Charles Auten added 12 points.
Mio limited Oscoda (5-2) to less than 10 points a quarter and led 29-13 at halftime and 49-18 after three quarters.
Akil Jones and Kyle Charters each scored nine points for Oscoda.
Au Gres 65, Atlanta 50
ATLANTA-Brett Maiser scored 24 points and the Au Gres boys basketball team defeated Atlanta 65-50 on Monday in a North Star League contest.
The Wolverines led 36-23 at the half and 48-32 after three quarters.
Jacob Chambers led Atlanta with 21 points and Sam Burcicki added nine points.
Tyler Jantzi added 11 points for Au Gres.
Roscommon 51, Tawas 41
TAWAS-Under Todd Kaems, the Tawas girls basketball team has usually done well at home.
That wasn't the case Monday and Kaems was left shaking his head after a 51-41 loss to Roscommon.
"We missed a lot of easy shots early in the game and defensively late we let them get some easy buckets in transition," Kaems said.
Tawas (2-4) trailed 13-8 after one quarter and 24-20 at halftime. Tawas tied the game 33-33 after three quarters, but Roscommon took control in the final period, outscoring the Braves 17-8.
Logan Hutek led Roscommon with 15 points. Belle Flory paced Tawas with 15 points and Jenna Szostak added 12.
Tawas hosts Pinconning on Thursday.
