SAULT STE. MARIE-Andy Marwede scored 25 points and the Alpena boys basketball team edged past Sault Ste. Marie in overtime on Monday 63-59.

Alpena (4-1) trailed 36-35 entering the fourth quarter, but outscored the Blue Devils 16-15 to force the extra period with a 51-51 deadlock. Alpena had the lead late in the quarter, but the Blue Devils forced overtime with a long three-pointer in the final seconds.

The Wildcats buckled down in overtime and outscored Sault 12-8.

"All night it was a struggle," Alpena coach John Pintar said. "It was one of those weird ones where we were in control, but they were making just enough shots (to stay close). (Before overtime) I told them I liked how they were playing, but we have to win ugly."

Tyler Pintar added 14 points for Alpena and Cody Tucker had 12.

Despite a slow start, the Wildcats led 17-12 after the first quarter. Sault charged back in the second quarter to force a 25-25 tie at halftime.

"We couldn't buy a shot and really struggled on the offensive end," Pintar said. "In the second half we started to take control a little bit."

Terrance Fuller led the Blue Devils with 15 points.

Alpena's JV team lost 58-36 to Sault and Braeden Werth led Alpena with 10 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Roscommon 51, Tawas 41

TAWAS-Under Todd Kaems, the Tawas girls basketball team has usually done well at home.

That wasn't the case Monday and Kaems was left shaking his head after a 51-41 loss to Roscommon.

"We missed a lot of easy shots early in the game and defensively late we let them get some easy buckets in transition," Kaems said.

Tawas (2-4) trailed 13-8 after one quarter and 24-20 at halftime. Tawas tied the game 33-33 after three quarters, but Roscommon took control in the final period, outscoring the Braves 17-8.

Logan Hutek led Roscommon with 15 points. Belle Flory paced Tawas with 15 points and Jenna Szostak added 12.

Tawas hosts Pinconning on Thursday.
